Research the Best Diet For You
One of the first things that you should do before you start a diet is to learn about the variety of different diets that are out there. Some diets require you to only eat meat; while some require you to replace a meal with a shake. Choosing a diet wisely will help you stay on the diet and actually lose weight. If you love to eat chocolate, but you choose a diet that requires you to avoid eating chocolate, you probably will not stay on the diet for very long.
Get a Physical
Most diet plans will suggest that you meet with your physician or health care provider before you start the diet. This is a good idea. Your doctor can evaluate your health to see if a particular diet plan will work for you and if you can still get proper nutrition on the diet. Visiting your doctor will give you baseline data, like blood pressure, cholesterol levels, current weight, and more so that you can determine if the diet has worked.
It is also a good idea to take your measurements before you start your diet. This way, you can see if you have lost inches, rather than just weight. Odds are you will notice your clothes getting looser if the diet is working, but it is also nice to be able to say, ‘I lost ‘x’ amount of inches,’ too.
Tell Your Friends and Family
You should also let your family and friends know that you are on a diet. This way, they can help you along the way by offering encouragement. When they know you are dieting, they can avoid tempting you with treats that can take you off of your diet. You might even consider joining a support group so you get even more encouragement.
Start at the Right Time
You should also look at your calendar to determine if going on a diet is a good idea. If you plan on starting to a diet on Monday, but on Friday you are going on a cruise or to an all-inclusive resort for vacation, your diet might not last very long. When you know you have situations that will tempt you, you might want to postpone the diet until that event is complete. Start your diet the day you return from your vacation or start it well before the event begins. If you have to be on a wedding in September, start the diet in April or May. Losing weight takes time.
Save Money for New Clothes
One more thing you should do is to save money for new clothes. Once you start to lose weight, your clothes will not fit properly and they will begin to look sloppy and unprofessional. You will need to buy clothes that fit and that can get expensive. Starting a savings account for new clothes can actually help encourage you to stay on the diet, especially if you love to shop for clothes!
